Bento Coelho da Silveira (Lisbon, 1617 - Lisbon, 1708) was a Portuguese painter, and one of the most appreciated Portuguese artists of the 17th century. He was appointed royal painter to King Pedro II in 1678. His works are mostly painted in oil on canvas, an innovative material in the 17th century, due to Italian influence. Albert Haupt, in 1912, refers to his works as "mannerist and spontaneous". Considered the fa presto of the late 17th and 18th centuries, he worked for the Crown (King João IV, King Afonso VI, King Pedro II), the nobility (Meneses, Lencastres) and religious orders (Jesuits, Discalced Carmelites), Dominicans, Augustinians, Franciscans, Poor Clares, Arrábidos, Cistercians, brotherhoods and confraternities. After receiving numerous commissions, he left a vast body of work spread throughout the country and abroad.
